At the heart of Santa & Me 1983
is a simple belief: even a small act of kindness can bring joy, restore hope, and remind people they’re not alone—especially during the holidays.
Our story begins with our founder, PJ Smith, whose childhood Christmases were filled with magic thanks to his parents, who dressed up as Mr. and Mrs. Claus and spread cheer at local events. Years later, when PJ’s father needed a new Santa suit, a happy accident occurred: the company sent two, and told them to keep the extra. That second suit ended up in PJ’s hands—and a new chapter began.
At first, PJ stepped into the Santa suit just for fun, visiting his grandchildren. But word quickly spread, and he was invited to make a surprise appearance at a friend’s restaurant. Not long after, a group of friends—moved by the spirit of giving—told PJ and his wife Jan (now lovingly known as Mrs. Claus) about a local family going through a hard time who could use a little Christmas magic. Without hesitation, they gathered gifts, made the visit, and created an unforgettable moment for everyone involved.
From that single act of kindness, a movement began.
The group that rallied around PJ and Jan that first season—and continues to support them today—is made up of lifelong friends from the Bay High School (Bay Village, Ohio) Class of 1983, along with their spouses and significant others. What started as a few friends helping out has grown into a full board of directors, united by a shared love of community, compassion, and the magic of the holidays.
Together, we formed Santa & Me 1983, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing the spirit of Christmas to families in need across the west suburbs of Cleveland—through personal Santa visits, custom video messages, and care packages filled with love and thoughtfulness.
